Observatory and Railroad Classic
Preview: The entire classic is within the Monongahela National Forest, which spreads 848,000 acres over nine counties. The first half of the ride is a 35-mile long, relatively gentle uphill all the way from Marlinton to Bartow. You'll pass through the Seneca State Forest (304-799-6213), where there is picnicking and primitive camping. The entire ride is within Pocahontas County. If you don't want to ride the whole 81-mile classic, you can still hit the two main attractions in a shorter challenge of 58 miles. Terrain: rolling to hilly. Traffic ranges from moderate to light on the main roads outbound and is practically nonexistent on the return.
