Gauley River National Recreation Area
Fishing is a very popular recreational activity in the Gauley River National Recreation Area. Bass, bluegill, catfish, trout (stocked), walleye and musky are found in this river. Fishing is best for musky and walleye. The state record walleye was caught in the Gauley River in 1990 measuring 33 inches in length and weighing 17.22 lbs.
Favorite tackle and bait for musky includes: bait casting reels using lures imitating minnows, large spinners, live creek chubs, suckers or large minnows are excellent bait. Favorite baits for walleye includes: live minnows and night crawlers are best natural baits. Best artificial baits are jigs, minnows imitating crank baits and spinners.
The Gauley tailwaters area is stocked with trout one time in February, once every two weeks March through May and one week in October.
