Potomac River
The Potomac River in eastern West Virginia is one of the fastest-growing river sports destinations in the state, thanks to controlled releases from Jennings Randolph Dam that provide first-class rafting challenges in spring and fall.
West Virginia Mineral County Parks And Recreation describes the North Branch of the Potomac as "a whitewater rafting river for the entire family."
The site continues: "Whitewater releases from Jennings Randolph Lake tumble down a continuous gradient of sand stone ledges and cobbles providing Class I, II and III rapids in close succession and are comprised of waves and rollers up to six feet high. Short spells of calm water permit bailing, relaxation and swimming. Trip length is 7 miles. The launching area is located in the Barnum Whitewater Area (BWA). Parking and restroom facilities are available at the launch site. The Mineral County Parks & Recreation Commission has instituted a $2.00 per person fee for all individuals entering BWA on release dates."
Whitewater releases from Jennings Randolph Lake are scheduled in April and May. The maximum flow is 1000 CFS during a whitewater release. Flow and release information is available at (304) 788-5732 and www.nab-wc.usace.army.mil/wc/whitewater2003.html for release schedules.
Directions to the Barnum Whitewater Area (BWA) from Interstate 68
Exit Interstate 68 at Cumberland, MD
Take Green Street Exit off of Interstate 68 (US Route 220 South) to Keyser, WV ? Approximately 20 miles
Follow US 220 South through Keyser to the intersection with US Route 50 ? Approximately 7 miles **
Take US Route 50 West to intersection of Route 42 ? Approximately 7 miles (just past Saddle Mountain overlook)
Take Route 42 West to Elk Garden, WV ? Approximately 5 miles
At Elk Garden take Route 46 East to the Barnum Whitewater Area Road ? Approximately 5 miles (Jennings Randolph Lake will be on your left)
Follow Barnum Road to parking area ? Approximately 2-1/2 miles
