The mountains, as we refer to them, of southern West Virginia call out to your inner soul. Their rivers offer the best whitewater rafting east of the Colorado and scenic hiking, biking and rock climbing trails abound.
Colorful history is abundant throughout the region and we invite you to experience the marvels of wild and wonderful southern West Virginia. Visit the historic coal mining towns of Thurmond and Hinton, formed in the heyday of the railroad. You can even find yourself deep under the earth touring a once operational coal mine and learning about life in a coal camp at the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley.
Civil war and battle re-enactment's bring to life another era in southern West Virginia's heritage. Take a day trip to the historic towns of Beckley, Fayetteville and Lewisburg, simply visiting the unique shops, galleries and quaint cafes or tracing Civil War monuments and battles, discovering an atmosphere lost in time.
Southern West Virginia is fortuitous to have four distinct seasons. Spring offers limitless beauty with varying species of flora and fauna highlighted in the surrounding state parks. Summer is host to outdoor adventures, concerts, theatre productions under the stars, and celebrations of West Virginia heritage at arts and crafts festivals. Fall is a splendid array of foliage, cuisine, and festivals complimented by West Virginia's largest one day festival, Bridge Day, honoring the technological wonder of the world's longest, single span, steel arch bridge. Winter recreation includes skiing, snowboarding and tubing and indoor diversions range from superb holiday shopping and fine entertainment to holiday performances at local theatres.
