John Henry, the steel drivin' man
Welcome to scenic Summers County, located in the southern part of Almost Heaven, West Virginia ! Summers County is home to the legendary John Henry, the steel drivin' man who beat the machine with a hammer in his hands in the late 1800's and the subject of a recently released Disney animated film. Rich in railroad history, discover our Railroad Museum, filled with artifacts from the early days of the C & O Railway. Visit our Veterans Museum, the only one of its kind in West Virginia, the Graham House Museum, attacked by Shawnee Indians in the 1700's, and the Saunders One-Room Schoolhouse Museum, filled with reminders of days gone by. In Hinton, you will find unique gift and antique shops, structures with rare and unusual architecture within the boundaries of Hinton's National Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Festivals lure visitors to scenic Summers County including the West Virgina Birthday Celebration in June, John Henry Days Festival held in July at the Great Bend Tunnel in Talcott, WV, West Virginia State Water Festival held during last week of July and the first week in August in Historic Hinton, and the Hinton Railroad Days Festival held each October which includes a train excursion and streets filled with arts and crafts.
