The 1853 Restaurant at McMechen House Inn~Moorefie
Although the 1853 Restaurant has great food and a great atmosphere, it is difficult to find. (Photo by Connie Dale) The 1853 Restaurant at McMechen House Inn is a jewel in downtown Moorefield. Walking in the front door is to walk instantly into a well-preserved Civil War era house complete with its high ceilings and beautiful hand-crafted wood work built as a Greek revival home. The well-to-do of the era built these homes with many small rooms to be able to heat them well with fireplaces. Each room on the first floor has been turned into a delightful niche for dining. Although the rooms are decorated with impeccable taste including white table cloths, fine glass and silverware; the atmosphere can be light, happy and casual or more romantic and exclusive. This restaurant is what you want to make of it. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1853 for Samuel A. McMechen, a local merchant. During the Civil War, the three story brick home served as headquarters to both the Union and Confederate forces as military control of the valley changed hands many times. Not only is the ambiance of the 1853 Restaurant top notch, so is the food. I and my party, which included an infant and toddler, arrived for lunch to find both specials of the day very light; perfect for a 90-plus degree weather. The only problem was a mix-up in our order, but we never even mentioned it because or server was very helpful with our two small children. My friend ordered a mixed green salad and received the feta cheese and tomato sandwich on toast instead, but it was great. I ordered off the menu and tried the BBQ pulled chicken sandwich on a Kaiser roll. I believe the menu called for it to come with some type of onion ring and it arrived with a homemade-type chip. The sandwich was worth the entire visit. The chips left me wanting something else. I topped the meal off with a special home brewed root beer that was great. We had a few mix ups, but not to matter, the decor and friendly people kept us really unaware. Daily specials vary, but the entire menu looks scrumptious. I would say most any traditional food you are looking for can be found at the 1853. It seems that the specials are more geared to a lighter and trendier concerting mind. The prices are very reasonable for the area and I think it is worth mentioning the two-year-old with us ate off the children
