Fairmont is the county seat of Marion County
Nestled away in the rolling hills of North Central West Virginia along side the Monongahela, Tygart and West Fork Rivers, is the City of Fairmont. Fairmont is the county seat of Marion County and with a population of just over 20,000 it is the largest municipality in Marion County. The City was chartered on February 18, 1899 and celebrated its 100th anniversary throughout 1999.
The City offers its citizens and business owners a rich mix of professional and governmental services supported by modest retail and industrial ventures. Quality of life issues are addressed through numerous recreational opportunities, educational programming and preservation efforts with regard to historical structures and culture. The City of Fairmont has experienced a strengthening economy during the past few years with new job creation and growth, particularly in the fields of high technology. Fairmont has created the only high technology business park in West Virginia, fostering research and development in fields such as automation, imaging and aerospace. The park is strategically located along the I-79 Technology Corridor at exit 132.
Fairmont residents and business owners enjoy some of the lowest property and Business and Occupation Taxes in the state. The 8.2 square miles that make up the corporate limits contain approximately 110 miles of maintained streets. The City also offers paid professional Police, Fire, Building/Code Enforcement, Land Use Planning, and Public Works departments. DIRECTIONS TO CITY HALL: Take Exit 137 off I-79, then take 310 North and go to the fourth light and make a right onto the Robert H. Mollohan Memorial Bridge (also known as the High Level Bridge)into downtown Fairmont. Go to the third stop light and make a left. Then turn left into the parking lot for the City/County Complex.
