Buckhannon Golf Course
The 9-hole "Buckhannon" course at the Buckhannon Country Club facility in Buckhannon, West Virginia features all the hallmarks of West Virginia golf. Buckhannon golf course opened in 1930. Charlie Carpenter manages the course as the General Manager.
A map of the Buckhannon Country Club greets those wishing to take on the unique 10-hole golf course, but the flat board cannot come close to show the topographical challenges which await.
"The golf course was designed by a lefthander,' said club vice president Bob Cupp. "A lefthanded golf course is not as easy as it looks.'
The rolling course features a variety of lies for the golf ball: sidehill, downhill, uphill and even the occasional flat lie. The course requires a golfer to think about not just the current shot, but even the one that could follow.
"The main object is to keep the ball in the short grass,' Cupp said. "If you can keep it in the short grass, you have a chance to score well. You have to pay attention to what you're doing or you're going to get burned.'
The country club is home to the Buckhannon-Upshur High School team, and several of its members have gone on to play at the collegiate level. A few have even become professional golfers, including course record holder Brad Westfall.
"The weekend golfer would get an education,' Cupp said. "If he can keep it in the fairway, he can play well. If you can play this golf course, you can play anywhere.
"We have a couple of holes that can tear you a new one,' Cupp said, referring to Nos. 2 and 6.
The second hole, a 363-yard par 4, is bordered by trees and has a green guarded by three sand traps in the front. The sixth hole, a 391-yard par 4, features a slight twist to the right. Both holes feature a thick rough should the golfer venture off the fairway.
"A hole that doesn't look like it would give you any trouble, but it does is No. 7,' Cupp said. "If you fall off the green to the left or right, you could be in trouble.'
Buckhannon Country Club is a par 71 course that measures 6,040 yards. The difference for the scoring comes on No. 5, which repeats as No. 14 on the back. No. 5 plays as an over-the-hump, 255-yard par 4, while its back-nine side is a 172-yard par 3.
The finishing hole for the front nine is a 152-yard par 3, while the 18th features a completely separate green and tee area. It plays as a 135-yard par 3.
"The greens are not that big of a problem, but at times getting to the green is a problem,' Cupp said.
The club offers a limited pro shop with balls, tees and other essentials. Cupp said the membership is trying to restore it to a full-service shop. During the summer months, the John Myers School is offered to youth golfers trying to better their game. Lessons for adults can also be arranged through the club.
The country club is open to the general public on weekdays only, and green fees cover an all-day rate. There is limited cart rentals available. Non-members must play with a member on weekends and holidays. Residents of Upshur County are limited to playing the course twice yearly, while out-of-county residents can have unlimited access to the course.
A variety of memberships are available, including a full membership, a limited membership for those aged 18-32, a single-person membership and a junior membership for those under 18. The club stages several tournaments and get-togethers from March through December.
The course participates in the American Lung Association's Golf Privilege Card and the West Virginia Golf Association's VIP Card. Call (304) 472-2250 for details. Master Card and Visa are accepted at the golf course.
Buckhannon Country Club also has a full-service restaurant that is available for rentals. Those utilizing the facility can hire the club's caterer or one of their own choosing. The club controls the bar portion of the facility.
Established around 1927, the course once served as a pick-up point for airmail services. Planes would circle the course once and pick up a mail bag suspended between two poles using a special hook. Local mail was then tossed out of the plane's cockpit. The practice was stopped shortly after World War II.
Buckhannon Country Club is located on the Tallmansville Road, just off Route 20 south of Buckhannon.
