Ravenswood is located on the Ohio River just north
Ravenswood, a city of 4,031, is centrally located between the three major metropolitan areas of West Virginia; the cities of Charleston, Huntington, and Parkersburg. The City is located one and one half miles from Interstate 77 on US 33 West, a modern four-lane highway. US 33 offers a direct route to Columbus, Ohio which is located 110 miles west of Ravenswood. In addition to the modern highway system, other transportation options include rail, air (the Jackson County airport is located 10 miles south of town) and water transportation. Ravenswood is located in the heart of the Jackson County Inland District Port Authority, the only working port authority in West Virginia. Ravenswood is located on the Ohio River just north of the famous river bend. Ravenswood's Riverfront Park is located along the banks of the Ohio River and Sandy Creek. It offers a variety of recreational opportunities including: boating and other water sports; picnicking and relaxing in one of the picnic shelters or at one of the barbeque areas; enjoying live musical performances and movies at the stage and band shell building; or a visit to the Washington Lands Museum or the Sayre Cabin, a farmstead and log cabin that recreate the settler's life during the period of 1840 to 1880. Occasionally, you may have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Delta Queen or other paddle wheel passenger boats that navigate past Riverfront Park on their way to Wheeling and Pittsburgh to the north or Cincinnati and New Orleans to the south. In addition to Riverfront Park, the City offers recreational activities for the whole family such as tennis, swimming, volleyball, outdoor basketball, baseball, a playground designed for children from toddler to the age of twelve, and a beautiful senior center equipped with a shallow, indoor swimming pool. The homes in Ravenswood are predominately single-family units. They range from beautiful and historically significant Victorian type homes through the one-story ranch style homes popular in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and the two-story homes preferred in the 90s. Ravenswood is home to fine public schools and a church run school ranging from grades K through 12. Come visit us and I trust that you will find the City of Ravenswood to be............ The District is bounded by Sand Creek and the Ohio River to the south and west and by Sycamore Street and the town limits to the north and east. CLICK HERE to learn more about the District. The HLC and the RDA need your help to complete the work of documenting the history of the area. Information that is needed includes the history of the buildings that currently exist or previously existed in the area, whom they were constructed by, what they were used for, and who lived in or used the structures. Pictures depicting the area would be particularly helpful. If you can help in this effort, contact Mark Gorman. The RDA has formed a subcommittee that will work toward gathering information and public input for a new Comprehensive Plan for the city. If you would like to help with this effort, contact Mark Gorman. Follow this link to the Comprehensive Plan Work Page.
