The 2007 race course is improved from past editions with several miles of new trail, two reroutes around muddy spots and the elimination of a dirt road section, taking the entire course off road after the start. Single speed and fixed gear riders appreciated these changes.< See Full Blackwater Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, with Pond Jump/Kid's Race Photos by Don Parks, iPlayOutside.com Saturday, Sunday, June 16-17, 2007 -- Mount Zion, WV Appalachian Classic - WVMBA #6 The 11 year old Appalachian Classic WVMBA Points Race hosts a pond jump, live music, kids race and even a 5k trail run (added this year). Sunday morn came fast and it was time for one of the oldest events on the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s circuit, The Appalachian Classic WVMBA Points Race. Gunnar Shogren of Morgantown, WV was the first to the top of the climb on his single-speed followed by a host of others that included Steve Hill of Elkview, WV, Justin Pokrivka of Tarentum PA, Joey Riddle of Elkins, WV, and Robert Spreng of Butler, PA to name a few.< See Full Appalachain Classic Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, iPlayOutside.com Sunday, June 3, 2007 -- Mc Gaheysville, VA / Massanutten Resort Massanutten Hoo-Ha! - WVVUS #1/ USAC-MTB Final Early June hit and it was time to pack up the car and cross the border into Virginia for the Massanutten Hoo-Ha! The event was hosted by the great folks at Massanutten Resort. Most weekends when I head to a mountain bike race or trail run, I camp in a tent that’s less than sufficient, but hey, I like to play outside. This time it was different. The Hoo-ha is not just your normal run-of-the-mill mountain bike race. The event happens to be Round #1 of the West Virginia/Virginia Ultra Series (WVVUS). The series is being sponsored by Cannondale who's putting up over $2000 in merchandise for the championship awards! < See Full Hoo-Ha! Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by George Gannon, iPlayOutside.com Sunday, May 27, 2007 -- Charleston, WV / Little Creek Park, Trace Fork Canyon Race the Trace - WVMBA #5 You can't talk about Race For the Trace without mentioning a short section of trail known only as The Rocks. Most of the Rock Ridge Trail at Little Creek Park in South Charleston is steep, narrow or a nice combination of both. But the Rocks, named because of the twisted, winding patch marked by several large boulders, is the perfect mix of super fast downhill and technical single-track. While some handled the section with ease, other's were forced to put their bikes on their shoulder and walk down the hill. < See Full Race the Trace Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, iPlayOutside.com Saturday, May 19 - Sunday, May 20, 2007 -- Spencer, WV / Charles Fork Lake Tour de Lake - WVMBA #4 Charles Fork Lake is a multi-use area with over 25 miles of trails surrounding a mile long lake that sports excellent fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The trails were developed by local mountain biking enthusiasts. It's one of the most beautiful venues in the east. The trail system is mostly single-track that offers a rewarding experience for all levels of mountain bikers. Andrew Wiedrich of Morgantown, WV was the first rider flying in the big ring on the flat section of trail that followed the opening climb, but he was not alone. < See Full Tour de Lake Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, iPlayOutside.com Sunday, May 6, 2007 -- Morgantown, WV / Coopers Rock State Forest Henry Clay 30K - WVMBA #3 Back in the day, let’s say the late 1980’s, when Mountain Biking started to become popular in West Virginia; Cooper’s Rock was the place to ride for numerous riders. A lot has changed in the world of mountain biking since those days, like the innovations of front and rear shocks, 29” wheels, clip less pedals, camel packs, and carbon fiber just to name a few. Even with all of the hi-tech changes to the sport, some things still remain the same. Spandex is still the preferred racing short (go figure.) Hills are still hard to climb, rock gardens will forever make your teeth chatter, and Cooper’s Rock is still a killer place to ride. < See Full Henry Clay Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, iPlayOutside.com Sunday, April 22, 2007 -- Bruceton Mills, WV / Big Bear Lake Big Bear Lake Bike Classic - WVMBA #2 The trails at Big Bear are the kind you dream about with a single track that's to die for, extreme down hills, and scenic views like no other. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way either. Over 180 riders from all around the tri-state area descended upon the sleepy camp ground to participate in round two of the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association (WVMBA) Point Series. The weather was more forgiving than the first WVMBA event had to offer. Not a cloud in the blue sky, and with temperatures reaching the high 60’s, the day made everyone feel even more excited about the race start. < See Full Big Bear Recap/Results/Photos Coverage/Photos by JR Petsko, iPlayOutside.com Saturday/Sunday April 14 -April 15, 2007 -- Waverly, WV / Mountwood Park Challenge at Mountwood - WVMBA #1/OMBC #2 It is that time of year again, yes, time for mountain bike racing in the hills of West Virginia. Last Sunday riders from five different states headed to Mountwood State Park outside of Parkersburg, WV for the event. The joint series race offered WVMBA and OMBC Series points. For riders from the OMBC it would be their second event of the year, but for riders in the WVMBA series it was their first opportunity to show off their early season form. The weather on Sunday morning was far from optimal, but that did not stop over 170 riders from in and around the tri-state area from showing up. < See Full Mountwood Recap/Results/Photos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- West Virginia Mountain Bike Association, P.O.
