Bethany~National Register of Historic places
The whole village of Bethany is on the National Register of Historic places, and the town is the home of an outstanding small liberal arts college, Bethany College. Its founder, Alexander Campbell, was a true visionary and educational reformer. In Campbell's own words: "Intelligence and freedom are but two words for the same thing. An intelligent community will always be free; an ignorant one, never." For a nominal fee, you can take a guided tour of Campbell's home, family cemetery and church meeting house, as well as Old Main, one of the earliest and best examples of early collegiate Gothic architecture in the country. For guided tours, stop at the Renner Visitors' Center just east of Bethany on Route 67. There is no charge for self-guided tours of the Campbell Cemetery, Old Main and the Old Meeting House.
